Map 11. Livestock production systems
in East Africa
Map 11 shows
the livestock production systems for East Africa. It uses the same
definitions and thresholds applied for the global maps in Section 2.
However, the three different agroclimatic regions were defined using
higher-resolution (from a 0.5 x 0.5 degree grid to a 0.167 x 0.167
degree one) climatic layers (Jones, 1987). The same thresholds for
LGP and average temperatures chosen for the global map were used
here.
In terms of area, the most important livestock production
systems in East Africa are the livestock only, rangeland-based
arid/semi-arid (LGA) and the mixed rainfed arid/semi-arid (MRA).
In
terms of numbers of people (recalling Map
10), it is the mixed
farming systems (humid/subhumid [MRH] and temperate/tropical
highland [MRT]) that
dominate.
