Training at ILRI

There are different training possibilities at ILRI which are coordinated by the Capacity Strengthening Unit (CaSt) of the Directorate of the Partnerships and Communications

Graduate Fellowships

Eligibility

The ILRI Graduate Fellowships are intended primarily for national research and extension services (NARES) employees undertaking MSc or PhD studies and who have completed their BSc or MSc or equivalent degree. Awards are for a maximum of three years. For PhD awards university registration before the candidate joins ILRI is strongly preferred, but not essential requirement.

For MSc programs, the awardee should be registered at a university and have already successfully completed his/her course work.

The fellows are required to work on a project related to existing ILRI research protocols. Each fellow will have an ILRI supervisor and shall join the institute for a period of 6 to 36 months, depending on the nature of their research and their degree registration. ILRI will provides financial support, supervision and research facilities for the period at the institute and also provides supervision and research support for students who come with external funding. Awards are competitive and the selection depends upon the student's academic excellence and their particular research interest. The size of the Graduate Fellow Program is limited by the availability of ILRI supervisors, research facilities and funding.

Group Training

ILRI offers three categories of courses under group training: core courses, program courses and network courses.

Core courses are designed and implemented jointly by the training section and ILRI's research themes. Their contents cut across theme boundaries and are of basic importance to either national research and extension services (NARES) or to ILRI. Examples of such courses include information management, scientific writing, biometrics.

Program courses are specific to a particular ILRI research theme. They address issues and content that clearly promulgate ILRI's objectives in livestock production. They offer the practical approach to issues than academic courses, e.g., diagnostics of tick-borne diseases.

Network courses are initiated by the ILRI-associated networks, e.g. cattle traction. Each of ILRI's courses is based on the existing work program and expertise of the institute. The design, content and schedule of these courses allow them to be presented by ILRI staff. Where additional teaching staff are required, they are sought from the national research and extension services (NARES) centres, and particularly the ILRI associated institutes.

ILRI is not a university nor a training college and does not offer complete or those that could be offered by formal learning institutions. ILRI's courses focuses on new results, ideas and possibilities for future work in the course area. Background materials provided are sufficient to give only a basis for understanding the new results and ideas. Each course includes time for discussion and debate.

ILRI avoids courses composed largely or entirely of conventional classroom lectures. ILRI's strengths and advantages in training come from its strong research base which includes as much field and laboratory work as possible.

ILRI advertises these courses on it’s website http://www.ilri.org/ Applications are accepted only through a nominating institution. Self-nominations are not accepted.

The following documents are required for this application:

  1. Cover letter
