POSTDOCTORAL SCIENTIST- SPATIAL ECONOMETRICIAN

General: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is a non-profit international research organisation, serving a global mandate to improve productivity of smallholder livestock systems and to protect the natural resources that support these systems. ILRI has staff and research activities in Latin America, Asia and Africa. ILRI’s principal research facilities are located in Kenya and Ethiopia and its headquarters are based in Nairobi, Kenya. ILRI is one of the 16 research centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), which comprises over 55 member countries, international organisations and foundations. The co-sponsors for the CGIAR are the World Bank, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The position: ILRI seeks to appoint a spatial econometrician to join its poverty-mapping project as part of the “Targeting” work of the Institute. Duties will focus on research in Kenya and will support the global mandate of ILRI to address poverty through the identification of research priorities. Specific duties will involve: (a) Leading the analysis of the existing poverty data and other related GIS data; (b) Working closely with Kenyan Government (CBS) staff and World Bank poverty mapping team; (c) Working in collaboration with ILRI scientists to explore model-based approaches to build upon and complement the econometric approach; (d) Providing hands-on training in spatial analysis and GIS techniques to CBS and other Kenyan Government staff; (e) Liasing with various international and national agencies working on poverty- livestock issues; (f) Providing timely research reports, assessments and work plans as required by ILRI and donor organizations.

Location: The position is located in ILRI headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

Qualifications and experience: The incumbent should hold a PhD or equivalent in econometrics, economics or system analysis and have at least 3 years research experience in the analysis of spatial data, preferably in Developing Countries. Essential qualities include: experience in GIS data analysis including strong spatial econometrics background; experience in the conception, design, implementation, analysis and reporting of complex research projects; commitment to research for the production of international public goods and to a team approach to research, development and training; willingness to travel for project development, field work and presentation of project outputs. Desirable qualifications include experience and knowledge of the East African region, and previous spatial poverty-related analyses.

Terms of appointment: Initial appointment is for two years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive remuneration package including salary based on experience and paid in US dollars.
