ILRI has extensive in-house and external databases that are mounted on the institute's local area network (LAN) at ILRI-Kenya and ILRI-Ethiopia.

Bibliographic database: ILRI maintains a bibliographic database of over 140,000 references of documents dealing with livestock research and development in tropical developing countries. These references are locally generated or extracted from AGRIS. This database is available on the LAN at ILRI-Ethiopia and on CD-ROM at ILRI-Kenya and at ILRI's zonal sites. The references for which we have copyrights are now available for searching on this web site.

The ILRI-Ethiopia library also maintains a serials database that lists the serials holdings of both ILRI-Kenya and ILRI-Ethiopia library. Currently, the database consists of about 1100 references to reputed scientific and technical journals and other serial publications, most of which are related to Animal Agriculture.

Time-series database: This database, which is mounted on the LAN at ILRI-Kenya, provides comprehensive statistical information on livestock production and trade and human populations, with data drawn from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) AGROSTAT database and the United Nations Department of Agriculture (USDA) and other published sources. The database contains 411,287 records encompassing information from 231 countries of the world over the last 34 years.

ILRI publications database: The ILRI publications database contains official ILRI publications in full text, as well as the bibliographical references to articles in peer reviewed journals, monographs or chapters in monographs, and papers published in proceedings written by researchers in the context of their work at ILRI. This database can be accessed on the lan at ILRI-Nairobi and ILRI-Ethiopia, as well as on this website.

Reprint database: The reprint database contains a collection of reprints relevant to ILRI's programmes from journals the library does not subscribe to. The database contains 6125 records, of which about 4000 documents are actually in the library. This database is available on both ILRI campuses.

Global database of libraries and information systems for animal agriculture: ILRI has conducted a world-wide survey of institutions providing information on livestock and related subjects. The aim is to identify major institutions working in this field and establish partnerships with them for providing information support to global research on livestock. This database so far has profiles of more than 280 institutions.

Training database: This is a searchable database of all  scientists from national agricultural research systems (NARS) in sub-Saharan Africa trained in centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) between 1975 and 1996.  The full database will permit the first detailed analysis of CGIAR contribution to NARS expertise in sub-Saharan Africa. The database, which contains about 18,000 records, is published on a CD-ROM.

AGRICOLA: AGRICOLA (AGRICultural OnLine Access) is a database of bibliographic records created by the National Agricultural Library (NAL) and its co-operators. The database covers materials dating from the 16th century to the present. The records describe publications and resources encompassing all aspects of agriculture and allied disciplines, including plant and animal sciences, forestry, entomology, soil and water resources, agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, agricultural products, alternative farming practices and food and nutrition. Auxiliary subjects that support NAL's Information Centre activities, such as agricultural trade and marketing, rural information, and animal welfare, are also included. AGRICOLA does not contain the materials themselves; but it can help you identify and find them, and you can search AGRICOLA via the World WideWeb. AGRIS: AGRIS provides bibliographic coverage of agricultural science and technology literature world-wide. Assembled by the AGRIS Co-ordinating Centre, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) , AGRIS offers an international perspective on crucial agricultural research. The many aspects of agriculture, including forestry, animal husbandry, aquatic sciences and fisheries and human nutrition from over 135 participating countries are covered. Literature includes unique material such as unpublished scientific and technical reports, theses, conference papers, government publications. Approximately 130,000 records are added each year with key words in English, French and Spanish. The archival discs now cover 1975 through 1990. The current disc covers from 1991 to the present.

CABI: CAB ABSTRACTS is a bibliographic database compiled by CAB INTERNATIONAL. It covers the significant research and development literature in the fields of agriculture, forestry, aspects of human health, human nutrition, animal health and the management and conservation of natural resources. Over three million records have been added to the database since its computerisation in 1973. These records are made available through a wide range of products and services both printed and electronic.

CURRENT CONTENTS: This database is maintained by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). Current Contents is available in seven multidisciplinary editions of which ILRI subscribes to Agriculture, Biology and Environmental Sciences (ABES) and Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) editions. Each edition provides a comprehensive coverage of journals in each subject area.

FAOSTAT: This database comprises the FAO year-books in electronic form. FAOSTAT provides statistical information from more than 200 countries and territories on approximately 800 agricultural commodities and 2300 agriculture-related variables. The database comprises the following series: Population; Land use; Production; Trade; Food balance sheets; Forest products; Food aid in figures; and Fisheries - catches and landings.

SESAME: This is a bibliographic database of documents in French on tropical agriculture. It lists monographs and covers the contents of more than 30 journals.
