| Responsibilities |
General: The Africa-based, globally networked International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) helps reduce poverty, hunger and environmental degradation by enhancing animal agriculture in developing countries. ILRI positions its work at the dynamic interface of poverty alleviation and sustainable livestock livelihoods. Our staff work in partnerships and alliances with hundreds of organisations in developed and developing countries, including some of the finest universities and research institutions in the world. ILRI’s headquarters are in Nairobi, Kenya, with a second principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Our staff are also based in 7 partner institutions in other parts of Africa, in Asia and Latin America. We employ more than 700 staff from about 40 countries and are one of 15 centres around the world sponsored by the Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
The position: ILRI seeks to recruit a Post-Doctoral Market Economist to join the new project in Southern Africa on “Improving Market Participation by Small-Scale Livestock Producers”. The position will play a key coordinating role in a new project in Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe, conducted jointly by ILRI, ICRISAT and national partners. The main components of the project include: a) evaluation of constraints and opportunities for commercializing smallholder livestock production, b) testing and evaluation of alternative marketing and input delivery systems, c) and evaluation of impacts of market-led technology change. The postdoctoral economist will coordinate all the livestock and livestock-market related aspects of the project in the three countries, in consultation with the ILRI Regional Representative, and other ILRI, ICRISAT and national scientists. S/he would also play a key role in developing and sustaining the partnerships and communications activities needed to ensure that the project is conducted smoothly and achieves its objectives. |
| Core competencies |
• Strong capabilities in econometric, multi-market modelling and other forms of quantitative analysis demonstrated in appropriate written outputs, • Experience with analysis and modelling of agricultural value chains and market institutions using new institutional economics, and/or industrial organisation approaches. • Experience of working in multi-cultural teams, in a developing country setting and other experience with analysis of economic issues related to livestock. • Experience in pilot development of agricultural market interventions, and understanding of innovations systems approaches would be an advantage. • A willingness to travel frequently.

| A Ph.D. in either Economics, Agricultural Economics, Industrial Organisation, or related field with application to agriculture, obtained within the last 2 years, |

| Languages |
| Strong English language skills, both written and spoken, with a demonstrated record of publications in professional outlets. Knowledge of Portuguese would be an advantage. |

| This is a fixed term appointment for two and a half years. ILRI offers a competitive international remuneration package paid in US dollars. |
