Dr Felix Amerasinghe

Dr Felix Amerasinghe is a research scientist currently working as a full-time consultant for the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Since August 2001, he has worked as Team Leader of the Water Health and Environment Theme of IWMI where he is responsible for the global research programme. A university lecturer and research scientist specialising primarily in the field of medical entomology, Dr Amerasinghe is also working with an international group on a project on Biodiversity and Human Health commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). He holds BSc degree (First Class Honours) in zoology from the University of Ceylon, Sri Lanka, and PhD degree in zoology from the University of Bristol, UK. His major research has been in the field of mosquito taxonomy, ecology and the epidemiology of mosquito-borne diseases, with particular emphasis on disease problems in irrigation systems in the South Asian region. He is a member or fellow of several professional associations in Sri Lanka and other countries. He has served as the Head of a University Department, and has held membership and chairmanship of committees and councils in several Sri Lankan professional associations and national institutes. He was a member of the joint WHO/FAO/UNEP/UNCHS Panel of Experts on Environmental Management for Vector Control from 1988-98, and has also served regularly as a temporary advisor for WHO and UNEP. Dr Amerasinghe has authored various books and numerous articles, which were published in refereed journals, conference proceedings and peer-reviewed publications. Dr Amerasinghe is also recipient of a number of awards and honours and his name is included in the First Edition of the '2000 Outstanding Scientists of the 21st Century' volume published by the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, UK.
