Saskia holds a veterinary degree from the University of Ghent in Belgium (2001). After a year as a junior researcher at the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (LADIVET) from the National University of Cajamarca (Peru) she joined the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2002 as an adviser in veterinary public health in Paramaribo, Suriname.
In 2004, she left WHO to complete a Msc in Veterinary Epidemiology in the UK jointly awarded by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Royal Veterinary College.
After the Msc, she joined WHO’s Regional Office for the Americas in Washington DC to work on avian and pandemic influenza. From there she moved to WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland were she was the WHO focal point for the Global Early Warning System for major animal diseases, including zoonoses (GLEWS).
In October 2007, she joined the Department for Epidemic and Pandemic Preparedness and Response where she worked with the Alert and Response Operations team. In 2009, she spent 6 months in the WHO Country Office for China in Beijing working with the Communicable Diseases Surveillance and Response team supporting the Chinese Ministry of Health with their pandemic preparedness planning as well as with the prevention and control of infectious diseases in relation to the Beijing Summer Olympic Games 2008.
Saskia moved to ILRI Nairobi in February 2009 as project coordinator for the Early Detection, Reporting and Surveillance for Avian Influenza in Africa (EDRS-AIA). She was also the coordinator of the Participatory Epidemiology Network for Animal and Human Health (PENAPH).
In October 2010, she became Country Coordinator for ILRI in Mozambique based at the Regional Office for Southern Africa in Maputo, Mozambique. Some of the projects Saskia is involved in are the USAID funded project entitled: Mobilization of livestock research and extension for food security and poverty alleviation in Mozambique and the the EC/IFAD funded imGoats projects.

CURRENT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Contribute to improve performance of small ruminant value chains in Mozambique so they sustainably increase the household incomes and food security and, reduce the vulnerability of poor goat keepers, especially women.
