Feed and forage development program

The Feed and Forage Development Program aims to secure greater benefits from animal source-food production for producers and consumers by increasing the availability of improved feeds and forages, optimizing feeding strategies and reducing the cost of feed.

Activities are currently undertaken under three main research areas:

  1. Feeds and feeding strategies. Considering feed and feed resourcing as the interface between the positive and negative effects of livestock production; developing feed supply & demand scenarios that take nutritional needs into account; building small and medium enterprise opportunities around feed production, transaction and processing and; leveraging private sector research capabilities for the benefit of small holder producers.
  2. Making better use of genetic variability in feed and forages. Developing a greater understanding of the variation in key traits available through capturing greater genetic diversity and; enhancing the selection and improvement of forages and full purpose crops.
  3. Conservation and use of forage diversity. Conservation of diversity provides the basis of forage selection and improvement for enhanced use of these genetic resources. Activities include the collection, management, distribution and exchange of materials. Characterization and evaluation studies serve to generate new knowledge which supports the enhanced use of these resources in the future.
