Henry Kiara

Scientist, Epidemiologist

Over the last 10 years my research interests have focused mainly of the following key areas: • East Coast fever: This research has focused on better understanding of the epidemiology of the disease especially in pastoral productions systems, the impact of the diseases under different production systems and vaccination against the diseases using the live Infection and treatment method. • Contagious bovine pleuropneumonia: This study funded by the Welcome Trust sought to understand the epidemiology CBPP, its socioeconomic impact and evaluation of a modified T144 live vaccine. Options for the delivery of the vaccine were also explored. • Infectious diseases of cattle: This is an epidemiological study of the infectious diseases of cattle in western kenya funded by the Welcome Trust. The aim of the study is to try and understand the impact of infectious diseases and their interactions in calves up to the age of one year. Henry Kiara joined ILRI in June 1998. He is married and has four children, three of whom are triplets.CAREER SUMMARY 1998-Present: Research Officer, International Livestock Research Institute 1989-1998: Research Officer, Kenya Agricultural Research Institute 1984-1989: Research Officer, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development 1982-1984: Veterinary Officer, Ministry of Livestock Development 1981-1982: Tutorial fellow, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Nairobi CAREER HIGHLIGHTS • Interim Project coordinator for a project on “ Improving benefits of urban and peri-urban livestock production through management of associated human and environmental health risks in Nigeria”. • Consultant for VSF Belgium on an EC funded project on “Food Security and Livelihood Improvement Program for Eastern Equatorial – West of the Nile, Southern Sudan”. • As a member of the National Agricultural Research Task Force to develop a National Agricultural Research System. • Coordinator IDEAL Project • Coordinator-field aspects of the CBPP project OPERATING PROJECTS Improving livestock disease control and product safety RESEARCH INTERESTS Veterinary epidemiology OTHER INTERESTS History (ancient civilisations, church history) Athletics Gardening RECENT PUBLICATIONSKiara, H., Matere, C., O’Callaghan, C., McDermott, J and Perry, B. 2008.
