Making better use of existing feed resources

Challenge

Significant opportunities exist to use existing feed resources more effectively by moving feed between areas of surplus and deficit, improving feed quality and utilization through processing and better rationing of livestock. This will reduce the environmental impacts of feed production and reduce competition with food supply.

Impact

Recognizing that feed interventions could triple livestock productivity, success in dealing with the feed problem could dramatically improve livelihoods for 800 million poor livestock keepers.

Solution

  • Developing feed and fodder value chains and business opportunities that encourage mostly small- and medium-scale enterprises to engage in the feed business.
  • Developing and promoting feed and fodder processing technologies that match farms’ biophysical and socio-economic conditions.
  • Working with mostly small enterprises to take existing knowledge on least-cost rationing and harness it as a business opportunity, moving from ad hoc to planned feeding for a step change in productivity.
