Barry has wide experience in agricultural research and development, and program development. He has been a senior manager and leader of international agricultural research and development programs in the Horn of Africa and beyond for much of his thirty-year career – leveraging his expertise in research for development, policy analysis, project development and management, agribusiness development and marketing, and value chain development to contribute to improving the incomes of smallholder farmers. Barry started his career in the CGIAR working with ILCA and ILRI from 1991-1999. When he left ILRI, he joined ICRISAT as Program Director, NRM, Regional Director for West Africa, and Country Director in Mali. He later moved to ICRISAT HQ in India to become Director of Project Development and Marketing, leaving ICRISAT after 7 years to become Senior Vice President for Programs for CNFA, a US-based development NGO. Most recently, he has worked for Land O’Lakes as Country Director, Ethiopia and led the USAID-funded Ethiopia Dairy Development Project. Barry will coordinate ILRI research and policy support to the Ministry of Agriculture and EIAR. He will coordinate our efforts to assist in the finalization of the Livestock Master Plan, as well as to work with ILRI and colleagues in the Ministry of Agriculture and EIAR to develop ideas on how ILRI can provide more support for the development of the livestock sector in Ethiopia in the longer term. Barry will also be assisting the DG’s Representative in Ethiopia and other ILRI colleagues to mobilize resources to enable ILRI to expand its research program and impact in Ethiopia.
