Fred Unger is a veterinary epidemiologist from Germany and works in ILRI as a CIM (Centre for International Migration and Development) expert. He joined ILRI in December 2007 and is based in Bangkok, Thailand where he supports ILRI’s research on avian influenza in the region.   Fred graduated from veterinary school in 1989 and obtained a diploma in Animal Health Management in 1996 and a PhD in epidemiology in 2000. Previously, Fred worked at the German Institute of Epidemiology from 2005 to 2007 on the surveillance and control of avian influenza and, to a lesser extent, classical swine fever and bluetongue. His technical work focused on qualitative risk assessments and outbreak investigations. Between 2000 and 2005, Fred worked at the International Trypanotolerance Centre in the Gambia on surveillance and control of zoonoses. Before that, he spent five years working on the epidemiology of tick-borne disease in Uganda.
