Padmakumar is a livestock specialist currently managing the TATA-ILRI Programme on “Enhancing Livelihoods Using Livestock Knowledge Systems” since May 2009. He did his first degree in Agriculture in India and higher studies in Tropical Animal Production and Health in the University of Edinburgh, UK. Prior to ILRI he had worked for Intercooperation /Swiss Development Cooperation as Senior Subject Matter Specialist (livestock-livelihood-environment). As Senior SMS, Padma provided conceptual and thematic inputs for programmes on livestock-based livelihoods and ecologically sustainable livestock production. Besides, as part of the global LEAD project, he had been instrumental in developing and backstopping an Advocacy Network and a LEAD Communication Platform, which has both electronic and non-electronic communication products and services. He was involved in developing a concept note on “Participatory livestock research” and another on “Payment for Environmental Services” (together with FAO) for implementing a pilot project in India with GEF funding. I have also contributed in developing a project on “Livestock water productivity” for implementation in the Indo Gangetic Plains.
