Analysis of livestock sector finance flows in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda

Abstract

The objective of this analysis was to map climate finance flows for the livestock sector and related systems in Eastern Africa, in general, and Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, more specifically, given the importance of the sector in their respective economic systems and its identification as a priority in the national climate adaptation and mitigation discourse. Results show that resources for the livestock sector are inadequate to effectively implement the priority actions identified in key strategic documents at the national and regional level. There is a general lack of effective instruments for climate finance mapping and monitoring. This distorts the picture of the actual magnitude of livestock-targeting funds. Additionally, there seems to be a misalignment between the destination of flows and expressed needs.
