Capacity-building on Livestock Sector Investment and Policy Toolkit (LSIPT) and the application of system dynamics in value chain analysis

The collaboration between research and policymaking is a two-way street. Policy needs to be evidence-based and data-driven. At the same time, research must be dynamic and relevant to address the ever-changing country contexts.

The CGIAR initiative on National Policies and Strategies (NPS), Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI), International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) has organised this workshop to equip professionals, policymakers and practitioners with in-depth knowledge and practical tools to navigate complexities within the livestock sector and value chains. Specific objectives include understanding the potential uses of the Livestock Sector Investment and Policy Toolkit (LSIPT), a powerful resource enabling comprehensive analysis of crucial processes in decision-making and policy design within livestock production systems. Participants will also be trained in applying system dynamics principles to value chain analysis, offering a holistic view and empowering stakeholders to model and simulate value chain behaviours for more informed decision-making.

Expected Outcomes:

1. LSIPT training

  • Creation of Trainers of Trainers (TOTs) proficient in using LSIPT and value chain tools
  • Ability to provide technical support and training in LSIPT and value chain tools
  • Consulting prowess to identify critical livestock sector issues and propose interventions
  • Quantitative impact assessment using LSIPT and value chain models

2. Value chain analysis training

  • Mastery of system dynamics principles
  • Proficiency in developing and applying dynamic models to value chain scenarios
  • Enhancement of value chain resilience through system dynamics tools
  • Bridging qualitative and quantitative analyses in value chain dynamics

Participants

  • Technical staff from MINAGRI and the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB)
  • Economists, policy analysts and professionals from think tanks, universities and farmer organizations
  • Staff from ILRI and IFPRI
