How can Africa achieve food security and sustainable animal agriculture in the face of climate change?

In her plenary speech, Siboniso Moyo will emphasise how a sustainable livestock sector can play a multifunctional role such as improving healthcare and increasing women's empowerment in Africa. Contributing significantly to agricultural GDP, with variations between countries, Africa's diverse farming systems and breeds must be considered when seeking solutions. To achieve food security and sustainability amid climate change challenges, a multi-pronged approach is essential. Increasing food demand, driven by population growth, urbanisation and rising incomes, necessitates climate-resilient practices, including improved genetics, animal health and feeds. Collaboration across sectors and gender empowerment through resource access and knowledge are vital components. By embracing climate-resilient practices, leveraging technology, fostering sustainable management, promoting partnerships and empowering women in agriculture, Africa can successfully confront the challenges posed by climate change and secure a food-rich future for its population.
