In August 2024, Okeyo Mwai retired as ILRI’s Program Leader for Livestock Genetics Nutrition and Feed Resources, after over 22 years of dedicated service. Okeyo's career with ILRI began when he was recruited by ILCA, ILRI's predecessor, to lead capacity building in sustainable animal genetics.
During his tenure, Okeyo led the African-Asian Dairy Genetics Gain (AADGG) Research Program, which focused on applying emerging genomic and information technologies to transform tropical smallholder dairy systems. This program emphasized improving dairy productivity, data-driven decision-making, and capacity building in both Africa and Asia. His work significantly contributed to scaling impact in smallholder systems.
Okeyo's legacy includes more than thirty-five years of experience in practical design, leadership and implementation of livestock (cattle, sheep, goats and poultry) genetic improvement programs in developing countries, specifically in Kenya, Eastern and Southern Africa, South Asia and South East Asia regions. Through this distinguished career, Okeyo has published and co-published more than 5 book chapters and 300 scientific articles in refereed journals and international scientific conferences, as well as several manuals and the mentorship of many young scientists. This page compiles tributes to honor his extraordinary contributions to ILRI and the livestock sector.
