Putting co-design to the test: a Living Lab in Kenya

Abstract

This presentation examines the establishment and evolution of a Living Lab for People (LL4P) in Nandi County, Kenya, as a participatory, co-design approach for fostering low-emission and socially inclusive food system innovations. Using participatory action research, workshops, interviews, and stakeholder engagement, the project brought together farmers, government agencies, researchers, NGOs, and community organizations to identify, test, and support locally led innovations. Findings show that while the Living Lab successfully promoted collaboration, learning, and stakeholder ownership, challenges remained around power dynamics, decision-making, gender inclusion, and long-term governance. The presentation concludes that effective Living Labs require inclusive governance structures, sustained institutional support, and a shift toward locally driven leadership to achieve lasting and transformative food system change.
