Report on the implementation of the Kaimosi ATC Living Lab for People activities under the ILRI collaborative research agreement 2025

Abstract

The Kaimosi Agricultural Training Centre (ATC) Living Lab for People (LL4P) made significant progress during the 2025–2026 implementation period under the collaborative research agreement (CRA) with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). The initiative focused on strengthening governance structures, scaling innovation cases through practical learning activities, facilitating stakeholder and business linkages, and conducting a rapid impact assessment of supported innovations within the Nandi County food system. The LL4P strengthened its institutional and operational foundation through stakeholder consultations, advisory meetings, and development of the theory of change. Learning events conducted at innovators’ farms reached approximately 223 farmers and stakeholders, including women and youth, and showcased climate-smart innovations such as black soldier fly farming, mushroom cultivation, biochar production, vermicomposting, Azolla production, pig production, and beekeeping. The project also supported innovators to participate in a field day at Kaimosi ATC, enhancing visibility and stakeholder engagement. Preliminary impact assessment findings indicated that all supported innovations generated income within six months while also contributing to environmental sustainability, waste reduction, and improved resource use. The LL4P further promoted employment creation, social inclusion, knowledge exchange, and farmer-to-farmer learning. Despite logistical, financial, and staffing challenges, the initiative demonstrated strong potential for scaling climate-resilient and low-emission food systems innovations in Kenya.
