The future role of animal-sourced foods in a low-carbon global agrifood system: Shaping the alternative protein frontier

Abstract

Presents an LMIC-focused discussion on the future roles of alternatives to ASF proteins. This publication examines the emerging role of alternative protein, including plant-based, cell-based, fermentation-derived, and insect-based systems in shaping a low-carbon global agrifood system. It highlights the potential of these innovations to diversify protein sources and reduce environmental pressures, while acknowledging significant challenges such as high production costs, technological and regulatory barriers, and the need for sensory, nutritional, and price parity with conventional animal-sourced foods. The report concludes that realizing an integrated and equitable protein future will require coordinated policy, investment in accessible technologies, and robust support for affected communities.
