Anu Samuel Frank-Lawale

Program leader - Livestock Genetics, Nutrition and Feed Resources (LGNFR).

Anu Frank-Lawale is the Program Leader for Livestock Genetics, Nutrition, and Feed Resources. In this role, he leads a multidisciplinary team driving innovations in genetic improvement, digital phenotyping, and feed and nutrition strategies to enhance the productivity, efficiency, and climate resilience of livestock systems in low- and middle-income countries. His work is central to ILRI’s mission to deliver science-based, farmer-oriented solutions that are inclusive, locally adapted, and scalable.

A quantitative geneticist with more than 20 years of experience across academia, industry, and international research, he brings deep expertise in designing and implementing breeding programs for both terrestrial and aquatic species. His career reflects a strong farmer-focused approach, applying genetic and genomic tools to improve profitability and sustainability in diverse production systems.

He has held senior scientific and leadership roles in academic institutions and the private sector, contributing to capacity development and knowledge transfer across Africa, Asia, and North America. His academic contributions include applied research and teaching in aquaculture genetics, leading the development of selective breeding programs and advancing genomic tools for long-term trait evaluation.

Dr. Frank-Lawale holds a Ph.D. in Aquaculture Genetics from the University of Stirling and the Roslin Institute, an M.Sc. in Animal Breeding from the University of Edinburgh, and a B.Sc. in Agricultural and Food Sciences from the University of Nottingham.
