Senior scientist
Kristell Hergoualc’h is a senior scientist in ecosystem functions with Landscape Alliance’s Climate Change, Energy and Low-Carbon Development team and with ILRI at Mazingira centre. She has more than 20 years’ experience conducting research on climate change mitigation in tropical countries, including Indonesia, Peru, Costa Rica, the Congo Basin and Kenya. She specializes in the biogeochemical impacts that deforestation, forest degradation, land use and land-use change have on greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes, carbon (C) stocks and biodiversity. Her research spans a range of land uses and ecosystems, including forests, agroforests, agricultural lands, rangelands and grasslands, with a particular focus on peatlands. She is a lead author of several reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), notably the 2013 Supplement to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National GHG Inventories: Wetlands; the 2019 Refinement to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National GHG Inventories; and the 2027 Methodology Report on Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies, Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage for National GHG Inventories. She currently co-leads the Wetland Monitoring Research and Development Component of the Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI). She also serves as deputy coordinator of the Peatland Forest Science Unit of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO).
