International conference in South Africa features work from Safe Food, Fair Food project
From 25 to 29 August 2013, the 14th International Conference of the Association of Institutions for Tropical Veterinary Medicine (AITVM) was held in Johannesburg, South Africa. Theme of this years’ conference was “The livestock-human-wildlife interface” – Challenges in Animal Health and Production in urban/ peri-urban and extensive farming conservation systems.
The GIZ-funded, ILRI-led Safe Food, Fair Food project participated with two presentations on on-going project work in smallholder livestock value chains in Tanzania (dairy) and Uganda (pigs):
- Fortunate Shija, Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania: “The use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to confirm presence of selected pathogenic bacteria along the milk value chain in the Tanga region”
- Kristina Roesel, Freie Universität Berlin/ International Livestock Research Institute: “Fit for Human Consumption? A qualitative survey at a Ugandan pig abattoir”
