Rationalization and harmonization of policies, regulations and standards in the dairy industry in Eastern Africa

Rationalization and harmonization of policies, regulations and standards in the dairy industry in Eastern Africa

Through a harmonized regional approach, this project seeks to improve the efficiency of small-scale milk marketing in eastern Africa through supportive policy and institutional arrangements that integrate informal traders into formal milk marketing chains.

Objectives

  1. To develop a harmonized generic training and certification scheme for informal milk traders based on common minimum standards needed for hygienic handling of milk and dairy products.
  2. To facilitate the adoption of training and other business development services that will assure the quality of milk and dairy products sold by the region’s small-scale traders.

The project will initially be implemented in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Generic training materials will later be adapted and promoted in the remaining six member countries of the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA), namely, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Madagascar and Sudan.
