Annie Cook wins prize for best student poster at ISVEE – on ‘slaughterhouse zoonoses’

Congratulations to Annie Cook who won the prize for best student poster at the 13th conference of the International Society for Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics (ISVEE) held in Maastricht, the Netherlands on 20-24 August 2012. Annie is a PhD student at University of Edinburgh funded by the Medical Research Council (UK) and the Wellcome Trust (UK), and is working together with ILRI as part of Eric Fèvre’s team working on zoonotic diseases. Her work concludes that hygiene in slaughterhouses in western Kenya is poor and staff might be reservoirs for zoonotic diseases. Some of her key findings are:

  • Cleaners are more likely to have methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus carriage than other slaughterhouse workers
  • Workers carrying Campylobacter reported diarrhoea episode in previous three months
  • Workers with Salmonella did not report diarrhoea suggesting asymptomatic carriage
