Vietnam Institute of Animal Science and ILRI to enhance collaboration in livestock research

The Vietnam National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) are enhancing their collaboration to further advance livestock research in the country.

Staff from the two organizations recently reviewed the key achievements of their partnership, which started in 2009, and discussed areas for further cooperation. The meeting, on 27 June 2017, sought to enhance mutual understanding of the livestock research programs by both organizations and to assess areas where they can further join up their efforts.

The meeting were attended by Ngo Thi Kim Cuc, NIAS deputy general director, Ha Minh Tuan, deputy head of the Department of Science and International Cooperation, Luu Quang Minh, deputy head of Animal Cell Biotechnology Lab and other NIAS staff. ILRI was represented by Hung Nguyen, the regional representative for East and Southeast Asia and Thanh Nguyen, the Vietnam office manager.

The deputy head of NIAS Department of Science and International Cooperation, Tuan, shared the overall structure and research programs at NIAS with a focus on international collaboration activities, while Hung Nguyen gave updates on new research programs at ILRI and in the region.

Five projects/activities have so far been jointly developed and implemented by ILRI and NIAS over the past eight years including high-level visits by senior staff from both organization to Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and Hanoi in 2014 and 2015, respectively. An array of meetings, seminars and workshops have also been co-hosted by both organizations addressing breeds, feeds, food safety, environmental impacts, among other areas.

A plan of activities to guide further collaboration was developed at the close of the meeting. Among other areas, the two partners will focus on enhancing smallholder indigenous pig production, animal genetics resources and animal feed and forages.
