Africa–Asia Biosciences Challenge Fund (AABCF) event: advancing climate-smart livestock practices through science and partnership

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), in partnership with the University of Queensland (UQ) and the University of Melbourne (UoM), and supported by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), will host a five-day Africa–Asia Biosciences Challenge Fund (AABCF) capacity-building event at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) Nairobi campus from 19 to 23 January 2026.The event will bring together AABCF research fellows, livestock and biosciences experts, university partners, and representatives from national agricultural research institutions across Africa and Southeast Asia to share research, strengthen collaboration, and advance dialogue on climate-smart livestock systems.

Background
Livestock systems in Africa and Southeast Asia face shared challenges, including climate variability, rising demand for animal-source foods, environmental pressures, and transboundary disease risks. This event provides a platform for cross-regional research collaboration, knowledge exchange, and innovation to address these challenges collectively.

Purpose

The event aims to promote collaboration and knowledge exchange among early- and mid-career scientists, research institutions, and universities from Africa and Southeast Asia, supporting sustainable and climate-smart livestock systems.

Participants

Approximately 20–25 participants, including AABCF fellows, university partners, CGIAR scientists, and representatives from national agricultural research institutions in Africa and Southeast Asia.

Highlights

  • Research sharing and discussions among Africa–Asia scientists
  • Engagement with ILRI research platforms and facilities
  • Strengthening cross-regional partnerships and networks

Expected impact

  • Strengthened Africa–Asia research networks and institutional collaboration
  • Promotion of climate-smart livestock solutions
  • Advancement of cross-regional partnerships in livestock research and development.
