International Womens Day - 2021
About International Women's Day
International Women's Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The celebrations take place annually on March 8th across nations, organisations, institutions and various forums.
The first gathering celebrating the International Women's Day was held in 1911 and has since occurred for well over a century now. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women's achievements or to rally for women's equality since the celebrations also serve as a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
The day belongs to all groups collectively everywhere as one of the significant days of the year to celebrate women's achievements, raise awareness about women's equality and to also lobby for accelerated gender equality. No one government, NGO, charity, corporation, academic institution, women's network, or media hub is solely responsible for International Women's Day. On this day, women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political.
The International Livestock Research Institute has over the years marked the day in various ways to highlight the crucial role that women play in livestock.
ILRI marks the IWD 2021
The theme of International Women's Day 2021 is ''Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world.'' The theme celebrates the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
At ILRI, we are marking the day by reflecting on the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on women and the leadership strategies they are implementing to manage the situation towards recovery.
We interviewed some of our leaders at ILRI to highlight gender research at the Institute and at the One-CGIAR platform level. We also spoke to some of the women leading chicken business in Ethiopia and Tanzania, part of the Women in Business Project, to highlight the plight they have had to combat with during the pandemic and moving forward.
