
Joseph is a Monitoring and Evaluation Officer in one of the ILRI's programs- People Policy and Institution (PPI) and currently working for CGIAR Science programmes- Sustainable Animal and Aquatic Foods (SAAF) and evaluating the use of Black Soldier Fly as alternative animal feed ingredient in the Bill and Melinda Gate foundation project- Platform for Alternative Feed Ingredient Evaluation (PAFIE). Joseph is an Agricultural Economist with over 30 years' experience in Research and Development in Sub-Sahara Africa and previously worked in a USIAD feed the future projects in Kenya (dairy), AICCRA- Ethiopia and Southeastern Africa Clusters (World Bank Funded), and Sustainable Animal Productivity Livelihood Nutrition and Gender (SAPLING) in ILRI since 2016-2024. Before joining ILRI, Joseph work for the Ministry of Agriculture in Kenya for about 20 years as an Agricultural extensionist promoting improved agricultural technologies to smallholder farmers in many rural districts of Kenya, implementing many donors funded projects and programs, and rising from an Agricultural Officer to Assistant Director of Agriculture and head of Government Department. Joseph taught at the Universities as parttime Lecturer and also worked as Independent Consultant for many Developments and Research Organizations - conducting farming systems studies, resettlement plans, baseline and impact evaluation studies, value chain analysis, market systems and gender, using qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Joseph has a strong background on research methodologies, production economics and econometric modeling. Current research interest includes optimization of black soldier fly in animal feeds, gender and agricultural production, soil fertility management in smallholder farms, impact assessment of dairy innovations and technologies on farmers welfare-food security, nutrition and income. Joseph is a graduate of Agricultural Economics (MSc and BSc) from Egerton University Kenya and have attended several long and short courses on management and others related to the field of rural development.
Currently, Joseph is working on Dairy value chain analyzing the impact of personalized extension method on uptake of dairy innovations and technologies, and profitability, and optimization of Black soldier fly as alterative feed ingredient in Kenya and Tanzania, working with three commercial companies in South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya.
