How Innovation Bundles are Reclaiming Kenya’s Seed Sovereignty

Abstract

This article explores how integrated innovation bundles supported by CGIAR Multifunctional Landscapes are transforming degraded landscapes in Kenya by shifting practices from criminalized resource use to sustainable commercialization pathways. It highlights how coordinated combinations of agroecological practices, value-chain development, policy engagement, and community-led governance are enabling farmers to restore ecosystems while improving incomes and livelihood security. By aligning environmental restoration with economic incentives, these innovation bundles address long-standing tensions between conservation and development. The Kenyan experience demonstrates how multifunctional landscape approaches can unlock nature-positive growth, reduce land degradation, and create scalable models for inclusive and climate-resilient rural development.
